Mission
This is a one-on-one matching program that pairs one graduate student with an undergraduate student from any of our science, technology, engineering, and math fields here at UT. The goal of this program is to offer undergraduate students first-hand experience and advice about graduate school in a field they are interested learning more about. Each mentor-mentee relationship is matched based on the mentee’s goals and preferences indicated in our application form below.
Eligibility
Any graduate or professional student who is in good academic standing with the university is eligible to be a mentor. Any and all undergraduate students are eligible to be a mentee!
Benefits
- Individualized advice for undergraduate students who have questions about grad school, research, etc.
- Focus on supporting and reinforcing undergraduate students’ strengths and confidence
- Having someone committed to undergraduate students’ progress and well-being can help lower stress
- Graduate student mentors can discuss their personal experiences with research, advisers, etc allowing undergraduate students to gain an inside look at what graduate school, the application process, and graduate research are all about, or even help determine a possible career path!
Time commitment
Each mentor should be able to commit to serving as a mentor for the entire 2018-2019 academic year. The time commitment depends on what the mentor and mentee decide together. It is typical for a mentor and mentee to meet about 2-3 times each semester.
Matching
Undergraduates will be matched with graduate students based on mutual academic and personal interests that are filled out by each individual upon entrance into the program. Each application is reviewed by our mentoring committee and each mentee will be given the option of a few mentors to pick from. Mentees will meet their potential mentors in person at a social event organized by Pipeline.
